Featured Artist: Pooper
The hilariously named DBH artist, Pooper, creates brightly colored and quirky designs with a touch of dark humor. Whether it’s a polar bear eating a seal in a hot dog bun or a zombie craving “gains” at the gym, the artwork is a fresh and unexpected way to start the day.
Pooper — based in the Philippines — shares, “I started as a kid making letters with drawings to my parents” and has been interested in art ever since. As a kid, Pooper was fascinated with shows on Cartoon Network and video games like Super Mario Bros. because of the colorful imaginary worlds inspired by them. However, it wasn’t until Pooper’s time in college that they decided to purse graphic design as a profession.
Pooper admits that in order to feel inspired and prepared to create art, they must first have a movie or t.v. show playing on a screen in the background because it “keeps me relaxed while working.” Pooper also confesses, “my process is messy if it’s a personal drawing because I keep going back and forth on things.”
However, Pooper insists that if they are working for a client then there must be a “step-by-step process” for the project to be organized. Pooper admits, “I am my own worst critic” and they might take some time away from a project only to return and think, “What was I thinking?”
Pooper recently purchased the book Fables: The Complete Covers by James Jean because “I have always been impressed by his illustrations.” According to Pooper, the artist James Jean — famous for designing cover art for DC Comics — is an impressive “combination everything” like style and imagination. Pooper is also inspired by Leonardo da Vinci and would love to understand how “his brain works” so they could channel a similarly distinctive style into their own work.
Pooper reveals, “my vision for the future is me continuing to evolve with my art” and create a business that can travel anywhere. Pooper understands that the first step to success is “creating more and putting myself out there” and remembering to take it one day at a time.
