The Vacation You’ve Been Looking For: Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge
If you’re anything like the DBH team, then you probably grew up desperate to visit a galaxy far, far away. Who wants to ride in a minivan when you could fly in the Millennium Falcon… And, you definitely don’t want a boring old pet goldfish when you could have a porg instead, right? So, if you’ve been dying to visit the Star Wars universe since watching Episode IV: A New Hope, then your wish just came true! On May 31st, 2019, Disneyland’s Anaheim resort opened its doors to the newest attraction, the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge park. There might be a few places in the Star Wars galaxy that we’d actively avoid visiting (Alderaan seems like a bad spot to vacation), but we’re still excited about this new galactic experience in Star Wars Land!
Head to the forgotten planet of Batuu to mingle with smugglers, rebels, and other fellow travelers who’d rather stay hidden from the prying eyes of the First Order. The bustling market square — located in the village of Black Spire Outpost — is bursting with exotic wares, exciting adventures, and old friends like Chewbacca, Rey, and R2-D2. Head through the park gates and get transported to a galaxy far away with the sounds of the lively marketplace, the smells of the mouthwatering food stalls, and the new music by John Williams (the composer of the original Star Wars score) to make all your Star Wars dreams come true.
1) Pilot the Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy
Now is your chance to fly the Millennium Falcon by taking a trip on the Smugglers Run amusement park ride. Become a pilot, an engineer, or a gunner and help fly the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!
Han Solo’s beloved ship has been rebuilt (in all her shabby glory) and the businessman Hondo Ohnaka needs your help to smuggle ...er... or “transport” some goods! Channel your inner Han Solo or Chewbacca and make the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs with this exciting new experience.
2) Build Your Very Own Lightsaber
Find your way to Savi’s Workshop in Black Spire Outpost by following the mysterious “Gatherers” who lead you to a hidden shop to build your very own lightsaber (there are 120,000 possible combinations)!
Pick a hilt theme, a kyber crystal, and more with the help of Savi’s team and head back out into the world with your very own lightsaber. Be sure to keep the shop’s location a secret from the First Order and help protect the rebel’s cause though; don’t let any stormtroopers follow you down that alley!
3) Make Some New Friends
The galaxy can seem like a pretty scary place sometimes! I mean, there are aliens like Jabba the Hutt lurking around every corner just waiting to feed you to a Rancor. So, head to Droid Depot to get yourself an indispensable sidekick and a droid BFF who will help see you through the perils of galaxy life. The workshop is supplied with everything you’ll need to customize your very own Astromech Droid. Choose between the BB-series or the R-series, hand select the perfect colors, and get to work on making your very own droid with almost 280,000 unique combinations.
Or, if you’re looking for an even cuter best friend (sorry BB-8!), then head to the Creature Stall or the Toydarian Toymaker booth instead. If you’ve ever wanted a porg or a Kowakian monkey-lizard, now is your chance!
4) Drink or Drink Not. There is No Try
If you’ve been daydreaming about a trip to the Mos Eisley Cantina to get a tasty drink and listen to some tunes by Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, then you’re in for a treat! It might not be quite as much of a wretched hive of scum and villainy as the Mos Eisely Cantina, but Oga’s Cantina will have more than enough other attractions to satisfy you. The amazing attention to detail in Oga’s watering hole adds just the right amount of villainy to your Star Wars adventure. Plus, it has hilariously named alcoholic drinks like Jedi Mind Trick, Bloody Rancor, and the Yub Nub! Enjoy a glass of Jabba Juice on us while you’re there (just try not to think about the tapioca “eggs” in your drink that belong to that creepy frog-like alien in a glass tank behind the bar...).
If you’re looking for something non-alcoholic, Oga has you covered as well! Or you can take a trip down to the Milk Stand for the infamous Blue and Green Milk. It may seem a little less appealing than a refreshing Tatooine Sunset on a hot day, but there’s no question that all the cool kids are drinking the frosted Green and Blue Milk this year!
5) Find Your Lack of Food Disturbing
You can’t fight the First Order on an empty stomach, so be sure to visit some of the tasty food stalls while you are on Batuu. Exciting new “out of this world” food will be available at stalls like the Ronto Roasters, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, and more!
You can try Fried Endorian Tip-Yip (a rectangle-shaped fried chicken concoction) or snack on red and purple kettle corn at Kat Saka’s Kettle Shop. So, don’t worry if you’re feeling as hungry as an Ewok who’s on the hunt for some chewy Chewbacca meat, because Star Wars Land has something for everyone!
If you’re one of the lucky few to have a coveted reserved ticket to the new park (or you have a designated spot because of a reservation at a Disneyland Resort hotel between 5/31/2019 - 6/23/2019) then... please take us with you! We’ll carry all of your souvenirs and buy all the Blue Milks you can drink!
If not though, get ready for the grand public opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge — for Jedis and Dark Siders alike — on June 24th, 2019 with a Design By Humans Star Wars t-shirt today!
