Have you ever experienced that gut punch moment when you think your alarm is about to ring, and — instead —you discover there are 3 hours left to snooze in your warm cozy bed? That dread, mixed with euphoria, followed by the feeling that all is right with the world is just a small glimmer of the emotions that Featured Artist Obinsun’s delightful designs can evoke in his viewers. Obinsun’s unique outlook on life puts a comical spin on otherwise bleak topics, whether it’s his signature “happy” Grim Reaper figure or a witch enjoying her hobby of “witch crafts.” Obinsun, one of DBH’s much-loved creators, returns this month in the Artist Spotlight to share updates on his creative evolution with the DBH community.

Obinsun, or Joel, is a longtime DBH-er who shares, “when I’m not making art, I love to read and play D&D.” His self-described “doodle” art continues to impress and amuse audiences with its mix of upbeat and offbeat characters. Obinsun looks back on his artistic journey fondly; he shares, “I still remember uploading my first design to Design by Humans over 10 years ago :).”

Although Obinsun has been an artist for many years, he understands that art is fluid and it’s important for artists to evolve and change with it. For him, one of the “biggest [art] changes has happened recently” when he decided to create a “cohesive collection” rather than focusing on “strong standalone designs.” Similarly, he is looking to expand his artistic repertoire with a focus on painting. He says he always wanted to paint but that, “I was waiting for the perfect time to start. I finally realized if I wanted to paint, I had to just do it.” Today, he is excited to be working on his first painting and he can’t wait to share it with his community.
