SugarArcade’s designs are the perfect way to escape from the problems, hardships, and unexpected stress of daily life. She admits that her art’s focus on “cuteness” is meant to shield people from pain and sadness and to “add joy into people's lives” instead. Her multi-colored graphics pop with cheer and are the perfect reminder not to take life too seriously.
SugarArcade, aka Kristine, was born in South Korea and grew up in New Jersey; she has also lived and studied across the U.S. in New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado. Nonetheless, home is more than “a physical or geographical place” and it is wherever she can be near her friends and family.
SugarArcade has been fascinated by art since she “could hold a pencil”; however, it became a real passion for her when she grew interested in Pokémon in the 6th grade. The popular characters from the animated series inspired her dream of creating an animated series of her own. Today, she continues to enjoy kawaii-style art like tokidoki, Hello Kitty, Pusheen, and B.Duck and she appreciates “anything with big, iconic character art, bold lines and color.” She currently designs custom graphics for her clients, but she always makes time to build “the visual branding for my Twitch stream team, Super Rare” or draw for enjoyment and relaxation as well.
She admits that she’s a perfectionist and has always loved how vector art allows her “to zoom in 2500% and adjust the smallest detail.” However, she recognizes that being a perfectionist can also be a struggle because it makes her “view everything […] as a performance. With that, comes the pressure of judgement.” Although she loves sharing her work, she also experiences anxiety when showing someone else her creative process. Nonetheless, she is proud of her artistic journey and hopes to continue creating original character art and sharing it with the world.
