Featured Artist: Sngl
What’s fuzzy, full of whiskers, and sure to bring a smile to your face? Cat got your tongue? It’s this week’s Featured Artist Sngl. The artist, Sngl, jokes that he can’t stop “drawing cats and other fluffy animals” and that he fills his store with cats up to mischief to bring a smile to people’s faces. Like his self-portrait, Sngl always has cats on the mind (or on his shoulders!) and he loves introducing his audience to the freedom represented by his cat-inspired artwork. Let loose, knock a glass of water off the table, and embrace your inner cat with Sngl today!
Sngl is an illustrator in his late twenties from mainland China. He is currently living and working in Italy under the pen name, Sngl, and admits that he crafted his art alias “because I want to hide behind my works.” He teases that – like his cat character – he sometimes is a “boring person and a little afraid of crowds.” Nonetheless, he loves finding time for himself and thrives in a quiet environment where he can read “strange books,” watch animation from the ‘80s and ‘90s, and study his favorite artists like Miyazaki.
He loves to draw “fantastic creatures from nature” and put them in an unexpected human-like situation. However – most importantly – he tries to imagine the final product and then he draws with that goal in mind. For instance, if he is designing a t-shirt then he tries to imagine the person who would wear the tee, before he even puts pencil to paper. Nevertheless, he confesses, “I’m still on the way to finding my own language of art.” Although he struggles with feeling discouraged or comparing himself to other artists, he is trying to be “open-minded and focus on [his] own creative and growing skills.”
Someday he hopes to pursue his artwork full time and looks forward to a future where he can “completely make a life as an illustrator.” His favorite mantra – for himself, as well as other artists – is to just “keep drawing.”
